The
Kuttawa Fire Department was established approximately 1906. In 1964 the city
of Kuttawa, Kentucky was relocated by the United States Army Corps of
Engineers to allow for the impoundment of Lake Barkley, utilizing the
Cumberland River. With the moving of the town, the fire department also
moved and is now part of the city hall building. The Kuttawa Fire Department
has provided fire protection services from it current location to the
citizens of Kuttawa and Lyon County, Kentucky for over 36 years. After much
hard work, our department presently provides services to our community
utilizing a 1996 E-One FL70 Class A pumper, a 1987 4 – Guys Class A
Tanker-Pumper, and a 1976 Dodge W300 4 X 4 Utility vehicle on loan to us
from the Kentucky Division of Forestry.
The Kuttawa Fire Department is comprised of approximately 26 men and women,
who provide fire suppression services, fire prevention and education,
equipment and building maintenance. Additionally, some members are trained
as emergency medical technicians and paramedics. Most of these members are
full time employees of our county ambulance service and are of vital
importance in rendering emergency care to our members and the community, if
need be.
The Kuttawa Fire Department coverage area is estimated at 55 square miles.
We are a rural community but have a multitude of different occupancies and
responsibilities we respond to. These include, but are not limited to,
residential, light industrial, nursing homes, small business, restaurants,
motels, condominiums, truck stops, gas stations, agricultural (farms), and
asphalt emulsion bulk storage. Being located on Lake Barkley, we also have
responsibility for fire protection services at two large marinas, a sea
plane port, several United States Army Corps of Engineers recreational
facilities as well as response to calls involving the Army Corps of
Engineers Barkley Dam Power Reservation. Our response area also covers
approximately 9 miles of Interstate 24, 7 miles of US Highway 62 and 10
miles of the Paducah and Louisville Railroad. The Kuttawa Fire Department
also provides forestry fire response for the Kentucky Division of Forestry
as well as mutual aid response to two neighboring fire departments. |
